A reminder of a signal many overlook but that can overturn risk assets: the Japanese yen. Tonight, the USD/JPY briefly fell below 157, dropping over 1% intraday. Behind the yen's sharp rise is often a carry trade unwind—money borrowed cheaply in yen to buy global risk assets starts to pull back. The global stock crash in August last year was triggered by a yen carry unwind. High-beta assets like $BTC are always the first to be thrown off in such deleveraging. I'm not saying there will be a crash tonight, but this tension must be kept taut. Don't just focus on the Federal Reserve; moves from the Bank of Japan can equally decide the fate of your positions. Are you watching the yen?
